Makelangelo 3.0 going in Circles

Got Makelangelo set up and when I plug it in, the motors turn intermittently and the display shows Z000.20 and then changes back to Z000.00.
Tried stopping and resetting rumba board but continues to do the same thing.this is without even plugging in the usb cord.
using windows 8 on a surface pro.
RUMBA boards come with 3D printer firmware installed by default. Once you upload the Makelangelo code from Arduino things will behave as you expect.
